Early Enterprise Development

Abstract:

Amount Awarded: $25,000

The project aims to develop our understanding of the challenges facing enterprises in their early stages of development. The project will explore the role of dynamic capabilities in helping these enterprises meet these challenges, and so contribute to the theory of the firm. Researching startups along the lines proposed above is important both for the Bay Area and for Norway. The Bay Area has a high number of startups, and our research may contribute to more of them succeeding. As regards Norway, the need for innovation and startups is high, as Norway is trailing neighboring countries and most important trade partners when it comes to indicators of innovation. The Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry has recently initiated a White Paper regarding how more startups could succeed. Our research will fit into this work. Initial meetings between Teece (UC Berkeley) and Furseth (BI) have been held in 2023 and 2024 setting up this proposal, and the funding will allow this collaboration to develop the ideas and work initiated by these meetings, as well as to bring in other colleagues from UC Berkeley and BI.
