Ethnicity has been shown to shape political, social, and economic behavior in Africa, but the underlying mechanisms remain contested. In Berge et al (2017), we report from lab experiments involving 1,300 subjects from Nairobi, Kenya, to investigate the degree to which individuals are biased in favor of coethnics and against non-coethnics.
The present project is a follow-up to that study, aiming at inter-ethnic cooperation in Kenya with similar lab experiments that the research group has conducted in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This is a particular interesting comparison, given that Tanzania is seen as a country where ethnicity has played a much smaller role in political and social life than in Kenya.
The project involves a visit to NHH by the two Edward Miguel (PI from UC Berkeley) and a research stay at UC Berkeley by Kjetil Bjorvatn (PI from NHH) during the fall of 2017.
