The project (seminar and articles) concerns the status and challenges for freedom of expressions for workers - academics and artists. As academics in the US, teachers are denied teaching certain parts of American history or inform on trans sexual topics. Is this a breach of freedom of expression? Academics in Norway experience pressure on writing and teaching in English and to teach 1/3 of their curriculum with digital tools (videos). Academic freedom is a fundamental principle within the principle of academic freedom that encompasses the freedom to decide how to teach a curriculum (Univ. Act § 5). Is this an attack on the principle of freedom of expression or within the employer's freedom to manage? Actors in a performance on hidden racism in the Norwegian society experienced that the prime minister banned their performance, because they were showing a picture of the house of a member of the Government, with a negative attitude towards immigrants. Was this an attack on the principle of artistic freedom? This research project concerns different aspects of being workers in Norway and the US, and will look into the basic question whether freedom of expression is a challenge of our time.
