"NarrAItion: Bridging Humanities and AI" brings together scholars from the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Bergen to explore how narrative theories and language analysis can enhance the design, understanding, and ethical deployment of language models. We would like to strengthen our research collaborations and expand them to junior scholars from both sides with virtual collaboration and in-person visits at the University of Bergen’s Center for Digital Narrative and at UC Berkeley’s Center for Science, Technology, Medicine, and Society.
Our deliverables are designed to foster meaningful connections between the humanities and AI research (1) by creating an AI-centered lexicon of key narrative terms, (2) writing a survey paper on AI and narratology, and (3) hosting an innovative humanities-focused workshop at a leading computer science conference, all published under open-access as a resource for researchers beyond our community. The insights gained will help guide more culturally aware, ethically minded, and narratively nuanced development in AI, while also enriching humanities scholarship of AI narratology.
