We aim to advance the knowledge on international trade and economic growth by first, finalizing and elaborating on our research project "Slicing the Pie: Quantifying the Aggregate and Distributional effects of Trade." The novel framework in this project provides a tractable and more complete overview - compared to existing trade models - of the gains and losses across workers from trade shocks such as the increase in Chinese import-competition to the US, or the modification of trade tariffs on Mexican goods. A second part of this proposal proposes to organize a workshop on "Trade, Growth and Firm Dynamics." The goal is to enhance cooperation between academics from different backgrounds who work in this research field. To this end, we aim for variation among workshop participants in terms of methodologies (theory vs. empirics), perspective and seniority. The workshop provides an opportunity for Norwegian and US-based researchers to receive feedback on projects at intermediate stages of development, and to expand and integrate their respective research networks. Finally, we aim to develop new research projects using linked employer-employee data from Norway to gain a deeper understanding of how the interaction between firms and workers shapes the distributional impact of international trade.
